Going Upside Down

We are approximately half way into the 8 week series "Yoga in Action". This is my second series with the same group. It is so inspiring for me to engage with individuals that want more than status quo. It is clear that this group is ready to push their edge because the very first step, in a progression of steps, in successfully going upside down safely is a willingness to step out of ones' comfort zone. It starts there, and then we build, slowly, evenly, confidently.

Sometimes too life circumstances shakes us beyond what we were willing to step or wanting to go. For example, my mom just passed unexpectedly July 29, 2010. My ability to be present with the loss without collapsing into prolonged grief or keeping so busy that I don't have time to feel is largely determined by how grounded, strong and safe I feel. Safety begins with an anchor. On a yoga mat, physically, the anchor of a pose is that part of the body that is touching the ground. With inversions (going upside down), we practice correct hand placement to create a strong, resilient foundation, and protect the wrist from over use. Energetically the anchor of your being is that which you hold inside yourself as your grounding post. For that we practice taking the support of the breath for patience, comfort and resolve.

Whether you are wanting to remake yourself, improve your golf game, or stand tall when life throws you a curve ball, yoga will give you the tools to persevere with grace and confidence.
